1 This data stem from the national surveys on Transformation Risks and Quality of Life carried out annually by a team headed by the present author.

2 The place was a natural reserve in the famous forests Belovezhskaya Pushcha some 50 km from Brest in Belarus.

3 The huge shipyard was product of the socialist industrialization after 1945 and had some 17,500 employees in 1980. Having gone through various privatization and stabilization procedures after 1989, the shipyard employs currently some 2000 workers and specialists. As seen from this point of view the workers in Gdansk started a profound historical change under the leadership of Wałęsa. But they could hardly be called winners in this process.
